Overview
This map visualizes data from the 1926 First All-Union Census of the Soviet Union, showing the majority (>50 percent) ethnicity of the rural population in each district (raion) of the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic.
The map shows high majority percentages of those categorized in the census as Ukrainian (further Ukrainians) (90-100 percent indicated by the darkest shade of orange) in the center and northern areas of the Republic. Pockets of high concentrations of those categorized as Russian (indicated by light blue) can be seen in the south and east, and also on the border with Russia in the north. Lower majority percentages of Ukrainians (indicated by lighter shades of orange) are evident in the south-eastern areas of the Republic, with concentrations of those categorized as ethnic Germans (indicated by lime green) in the south, along with pockets of those categorized as Bulgarians (indicated by yellow).
The boundary lines indicate those of the March 1 1927 administrative division.
